Hair Extensions After Chemotherapy: The Questions We Get Asked Most
When clients come to us after chemo, they usually have the same questions swirling around in their head. We want to answer them honestly — not with the vague reassurances you find on most websites, but the real answers we give to real people sitting across from us every week.
"Is my hair even strong enough yet?"
Maybe. And we'll tell you the truth when you come in. What we look for is enough length — roughly 3 inches or more — and a scalp that's healthy and not reactive. Post-chemo hair is often finer and more fragile than it was before, but that doesn't automatically mean extensions are off the table. It means we're more careful, more conservative, and more deliberate about what we install.
"Will extensions slow down my regrowth?"
When done right? No. The method we use for post-chemo clients — microlinks — doesn't use heat, glue, or chemicals. The extensions sit alongside your natural hair without interfering with the follicles underneath. Many of our clients actually find their hair retains length better with extensions protecting the ends.
"My texture changed after chemo. Does that matter?"
It matters, and we account for it. We match extension hair to what your hair is now — not what it was before treatment. Some clients embrace their new texture entirely and we work with it. Some want something closer to their original hair. Either way, we find an approach that feels like you.
"Do I need clearance from my doctor?"
We don't require a formal note. We do ask that you're no longer in active treatment and that your scalp is in a stable, healthy state. If your oncologist has flagged anything specific about scalp sensitivity, let us know — it helps us take extra care in the right places.
"What will it actually look like?"
Really good. That's not a sales pitch — we can show you photos from previous clients in similar situations. Women who came in with two inches of fine regrowth and left looking like their full-haired selves. It never gets old for us.
